Okay I admit it, the H.264 codec in QT7 is pretty damn cool. What is even better is the fact that the Batman Begins and Serenity trailers are available for viewing the 1024p version is a whopping 1600×680 pixels requiring a bandwidth of about 1Mb per second (so about 8000kbit).
This is the future of movies here folks. This is a level of magnitude greater than standard DVD (more than 6x the resolution of standard video).
To bad my G4 is too slow to play it back at a proper frame rate, and I won’t be upgrading the desktop machine until Apple releases their multi-core processor G5 later this year (assuming that the budget allows for it).

At lunch today I ventured out to try and get a copy of Mario Party Advance for the Gameboy Advance and perhaps a DVD box set of FireFly. I stopped by BestBuy first and didn’t find either (well they had Mario Party, but I didn’t want to pay $30 for it), I did pick up a copy of Blade III, but I’m the kind of person who doesn’t like to buy just one thing so I didn’t end up buying it. Instead I went next door to Circuit City and found Blade III for $2 less and Mario Party for $5 less.
I kind of browsed the TV section of the DVDs (I didn’t find a copy of FireFly there either), and I came across a DVD of Galaxy Rangers. Goldmine! I had all the VHS copies (which I think I shelled out almost $300 at the time to get), and really wished it was available on DVD. A little over a year ago I did pick up a PAL DVD from the UK with a couple episodes on it (which happened to be most of the same episodes on the disc I now held in my hand). I figure at this point it’s been relegated to the “cheap bargain bin” kind of thing (although the disc did cost $11). I do get a little excited when I see that the copyright is 2005 (so this isn’t some weird relic that I happened upon, but something new). Keep in mind that this series is almost two decades old (1986), and is one of the few cartoon series that I really thought was a unique idea (the same guy who produced these produced a couple movies and the X-files series pilot).
Imagine my surprise when I do a search for Koch Vision (the distributer) and find out that they released two discs late last year and two discs last week (granted that’s only a total of 16 episodes of probably more than 50). I’ve written an email to the corporation to see if they’ve obtained the rights to the whole catalog. I also found that all four discs are available on Overstock (and a couple other places), so I’ve promptly ordered the other three discs.

Cara accepted the job in Bristol today, of course she doesn’t start until August 8th (that’s 3 1/2 months from now). This means that our next task after the wedding will be to start shopping for houses. I’m sure our vacation next week will include discussions about where we’d like to live. Right now I’m voting for Newington because it’s still close enough to Hartford and Manchester so that it’s not a pain to see my friends, close enough to Bristol that Cara shouldn’t have too much trouble getting to work in a reasonable amount of time and I won’t have to battle rush hour traffic too much to get into and out of work.

How much to you commit to the union of marriage? Do you change your name and join your bank accounts? If your future wife doesn’t want to change her name, do you? If you create a buffer by keeping separate names and separate bank accounts are you going into your marriage “covering your ass” and making it as easy as possible to get out at a later time?
A friend of a friend actually shops for food separately (using their own money) and keep it separately in the fridge. One pays the other a portion of rent as well. This sounds more like a roommate than a spouse. I wonder how the personal relationship works if they’ve created such a wide social boundary. Do they have two beds that they sleep in? Two televisions? Two phone lines?
Maybe none of this bothers me because Cara will be taking my name, and she’ll probably always make more money than I will. However, if the shoe was on the other foot, I don’t think I’d feel any different. I think I’m a pretty independent person, which might indicate that I too would like to create a buffer that would allow me to hold on to as much of that independence as possible, but I don’t. I look forward to the merger.
Maybe none of this bothers me because the relationship I have with Cara gives me a lot of independence, or maybe things like your name and your bank account are really more of an illusion of independence and not true independence.

The only thing worse than a bug that plagues a piece of software is a bug that is present in release after release of software. My biggest irritation is Apple’s Finder. I turn both “Show item info” and “Show icon preview” on, which seems to be problematic (for some reason).
The problem is that if I have a window open that gets modified in some fashion the Finder crashes. This happens sometimes when I copy a large number of graphic files from one location to another, “Export for Web” from Photoshop or rename a bunch of files using R-name. What is possibly more annoying is that when the Finder crashes (and promptly reloads itself), the window locations are reset (i.e. they’re all closed).
I wonder if this is fixed in Tiger…

Today Tiger gets loose. Upgrading the OS is very similar to hardware upgrades, they tend to be time consuming (although “time consuming” on a Mac is about an hour), and can cause a variety of inconsistencies. There are valuable features in Tiger, but is it worth the $129 price tag (although you can find it for under $100)?
So what’s so great?
Automator: Probably what I’m most interested in. This takes Apple’s scripting language (Applescript) to the next level allowing Joe User to create droplets with a GUI. I think this has a lot of potential, although it probably won’t really be useful until version 2.0.
Spotlight: Is apple’s desktop search engine. This is the battlefront, or at least what the media wants you to believe is the battlefront. I don’t know, most of my stuff is pretty well organized so I rarely need to search my computer for a file. I honestly think that this tool won’t be very valuable to most power users.
Dashboard: I paid for Konfabulator back when it was version 1.0. At that time I was excited about the possibilities (and immediately paid the shareware fee). In the long run, it’s useful but not the end-all-be-all that I thought it would be. Dashboard is pretty much a retread of Konfabulator (with some changes). So again, not super excited.
Safari RSS: I haven’t hopped on the RSS bandwagon, because it’s a relatively “techie” technology. Most users don’t care.
iChat AV: You really need friends with cameras to take advantage of this (not to mention a high end G4 or a G5 to host a video conference).
QuickTime 7: A new version of QuickTime is great, but it doesn’t really impact my user experience much.
.mac Sync: This does look cool, especially for users that have multiple machines and a .mac account (like me).
Mail: I use mail as my primary email application (for personal use), so an upgrade will be nice.
So the bottom line is that for most users Tiger won’t be adding a lot to the experience. That said, I’ll be purchasing my copy tonight!

Or more like curses and blessings. I’m pretty annoyed by Apple’s Genius Bar policies now. I commented earlier about stopping by the Apple store and finding out that I would have had to wait three hours (in a virtual line), to get to talk to a genius. Part of this is that Apple now has a “ProCare” plan that allows you to get a jump on the line, so I honestly think they’re trying to make it a bit more difficult for an average user to get in to see a genius.
Of course I could have just called up their 800 number and arranged to ship the computer to Apple, but honestly I just feel better handing the machine off to a human (although some human scratched the screen on the last laptop I dropped off).
So I starting last week I started trying to put my name on the list via the online sign-up. After about a week of missing getting in line with the 12:00PM time slot, I was finally able to get in on Monday. So I drive to Westfarms and walk into the Apple store about 5 after 12:00… and sit. I waited at the Genius Bar for a good 20 minutes before someone finally came over. I was able to explain the issue in all of five minutes and I was done. Pretty much a frustrating experience.
So, the blessings come when I got a phone message today saying the computer was ready to be picked up. Less than 48 hours and the computer is repaired, that’s pretty speedy (considering that the whole logic board was replaced). Maybe they’re doing it in-house now (the other laptop took about 10 days to get back to me).

In case you missed it, the Serenity trailer was posted on Apple’s trailer site.
On another note, I’m happy to see that Hitchhikers is getting quite a bit of push in regard to advertisements. There are a variety of ads on the internet plus a number of TV commercials that I’ve seen. Hopefully this drives those people who know nothing of the books to go see the film.

Okay, I know I’m making a mistake here. I’m starting to get psyched for Episode III. I just read Kevin Smith’s (spolierific) review over on View Askew, where he extols the film as being everything that the previous two films should have been (and more).
Now here’s the danger. I was content to go and see the film with my expectations being low. If the film ended up rocking my socks then it would have been all that much cooler. Now I’m starting to get psyched. This means that if it is on par with the rest of the series, I will feel used when I walk out of the theater. I curse myself for being too curious.

Cara is getting close to a decision in regard to her future job. She went on another interview over last weekend and has the last interview this Wednesday. Part of this process involves us figuring out where we want to live. After a bit of searching I was able to find Connecticut Town Profiles on the DECD site, which has lots of cool stuff about various towns (including cost of houses and crime).

May is almost here, and that means it’s almost Movie season… I mean summer. With that in mind, here are my predictions (on the movies that I give a crap about).
4/29 - Hitchhikers Guide - It will be good, but not great. Certainly not great enough for us to ever see another Hitchhiker’s movie
5/13 - Unleashed - This will be greatness (it already makes me want to spiz). This will probably end up on my 10 favorite movies of all time. Jet Li and Luc Besson (when is he going to direct another movie damnit), what’s not to like?
5/19 - Star Wars III - Better than the first three, but we’ll still walk away from the theater thinking “Fuck George“.
6/10 - Mr. & Mrs. Smith - Big fan of Doug Liman (he’s gone from Swingers to this action genera (and he’s doing a damn fine job). Hell if I could have the life of any director it would be him.
6/17 - Batman Begins - Could Warner Bros. finally do a super hero movie that doesn’t suck? It helps that fuck head has nothing to do with this one.
6/24 - Dukes of Hazzard - Popcorn flick. Sure it will suck ass, but at least I don’t have high expectations, so it should be fun.
6/29 - War of the Worlds - Many of you know I’m not a Spielberg fan, but at least I’m over my boycott of his movies. This should be a fun movie.
7/01 - Fantastic Four - Kind of ho-hum, it’s not going to be all that great (we probably won’t see another one).
7/15 - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - I have to admit that this one is right up fuck head’s, still doesn’t change the fact that he’s a fuck head.
7/29 - Stealth - A.K.A. Iron Eagle 5 (or whatever number is next,) this is going to suck so much I’m surprised it’s not a direct to video movie.
8/05 - Mike Judge Movie (untitled) - I don’t care what it’s called, this one looks like it may be even better than Office Space
10/28 - Legend of Zorro - Big fan of the first one, this one should be a fun ride.
8/30 - Serenity - This is sugary goodness. It’s not a Buffy or Angel movie, but perhaps even better. I know that the movie itself will kick ass, the question is… will people watch it enough so that we can spawn some sequels? Here’s hoping.
9/02 - The Transporter 2 - The first one had a lot of potential (and the fight in the oil was awesome), let’s hope for something as good, if not better.
10/07 - Wallace & Gromit - Again, something you know is just going to be a lot of fun.
10/21 - Doom - I’m a big fan of the Rock. The problem is that it’s a video game movie, and they’re never very good.
12/09 - Chronicals of Narnia - This is Lord of the Rings to me. I’m so much more interested in this over a bunch of Hobbits on vacation.
12/09 - Underworld: Evolution - I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. The concept was pretty good even if the rest of it was questionable. I think they’ll do a good job with this and we’ll see something better than the first.
12/14 - King Kong - Even if I wasn’t a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson kicks ass. Of course then you also have Jack Black I mean, how much fun will this movie be?

I don’t think you immediately realize when a TV show that you used to love jumps the shark. It’s a rising discomfort as your interest wanes. Then one day you stop watching all together because it’s not worth your time.
I’m there with Alias. I enjoyed the first three seasons quite a bit, but the fourth season starts with Sloane once again in charge of Sydney and company calling the shots. That was “it” the shark had been jumped, but I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I just stopped watching, shows started to pile up on the ReplayTV. I thought, “maybe if I’m bored I’ll watch them.” Well last night I finally canceled recording that show and deleted all the outstanding episodes.
It’s not like I am able to use that time for something else now because ABC just started a new series “Eyes” which probably won’t last long, but is far more interesting than “Alias”.

I’m happy to see that Apple added the ability to “Undo” text editing in Safari 1.3, it was a feature that I’ve been missing since I moved from Camino. Now if they would allow searches in text input boxes as well (and even better, search and replace).

Okay, I understand the concept (which is true), but the implementation is questionable…

You are ‘French’. In the nineteenth century, it was the international language of diplomacy. It is a ‘beautiful’ language, meaning that it is really just a low-fidelity copy of Latin.
You know the importance of communicating ‘diplomatically’, which for you means both being polite and friendly when necessary and using sophisticated, vicious sarcasm when appropriate. Your life is guided by either existentialism or nihilism, depending on the weather. You have a certain appreciation for the finer things in life, which is a diplomatic way of saying that you are a disgusting hedonist. Your problem is that French has been obsolete for a long time.
What obsolete skill are you? brought to you by Quizilla

Found a bug in mySQL tonight… It seems as though you need to pad your column results if you’re using a UNION. For instance:
(SELECT null AS url FROM training_user_test_record) UNION (SELECT tf_url AS url FROM training_file WHERE tf_course_tc_id = 1)
Returns ‘null’ for ‘url’ even if ‘tf_url’ isn’t null. The issue isn’t that it’s returning the wrong row, but that mySQL gets confused and doesn’t make room for the data. Take for instance:
(SELECT 'xx' AS url FROM training_user_test_record) UNION (SELECT tf_url AS url FROM training_file WHERE tf_course_tc_id = 1)
This will return the first two characters of ‘tf_url’ as ‘url’. What a pain. So the solution is:
(SELECT 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' AS url FROM training_user_test_record) UNION (SELECT tf_url AS url FROM training_file WHERE tf_course_tc_id = 1)
And hope that tf_url is fewer than 32 characters (although I can always expand that).
UPDATE: Apparently this isn’t a bug but an “expected” behavior (well I didn’t expect it, but that’s what http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=1322 says.

I’m not having any luck with companies shipping car parts. First there was the Lotus shipping fiasco, now I found out that another package was delivered to someone else. This package was my $150 subwoofer for the Subaru.
My tracking number showed that UPS delivered my packaged “to the front door” two days ago. So yesterday I went on a short hunt-and-gather looking for the thing (not like it was a small package that was hiding in some obscure location). Unsuccessful I wrote back to the shipper explaining that the package never came and asked them to verify the address. They swore it was labeled correctly.
Of course this is one of the times that I’m starting to have a suspicion that I should insure things more often (I’m not much of a believer in insurance 9 times out of 10). I call up UPS, and after a short wait I’m told that their records show it being delivered to 235 School street (not 255).
I stopped by 235 today and there is my package (luckily) still sitting on their porch. The label did indeed say 235, so I’m 1 for 3 with shippers sending stuff to erroneous addresses (I did actually get my cargo net to my house properly). Let’s hope my missing skid plate parts get to my address properly.

It’s now been a couple days since the announcement that Adobe is buying Macromedia. This means absolutely to the 98% of people who own computers (their idea of a graphics application is Microsoft paint). The rest of us are either happy or sad. I’ve read responses from a variety of people who all weigh in, I guess I should add my two cents.

Our world is disposable. There are very few things today that we upgrade or fix (if they break). Computers are marginally upgradable, but even they get outpaced by technology fairly fast. My homebrew PC would need a new motherboard and memory if I wanted to upgrade the processor (granted most the rest of the box would stay). My Mac (which is about the same age), would need a total replacement.
I find it interesting that my radar detector is upgradable, especially since it is probably seven years old. I just sent my Valentine 1 back to the factory to be upgraded (although theoretically it’s more of a replacement than an upgrade). I don’t know what happens with the original unit (for all I know it goes into the trash, although I would imagine there is still value in the components).
So now my upgraded Valentine 1 can go into my “stock” (for now) WRX…

I spent most of last evening (from about 6:30 until almost Midnight) at a Manchester planning board meeting. My parents are attempting to build a small condo complex in Manchester, but in order to do so they need to have the zoning changed for the area they wish to develop.
Things started out mundane (and mind boggingly boring) enough when they finally started their presentation (at about 7:45). Their presentation (where their lawyer, two engineers and another architect besides my father spoke), ended around 10 wherein it was opened up to the public. This is where it got interesting.

Ran across http://www.consumating.com/ which is a community/dating site, but what makes it (potentially) interesting is that it asks a weekly question. A good way to get noticed, but more importantly, it’s not always easy to talk about yourself. It’s a whole lot easier to answer a question though (even if it is about yourself).

This is pretty huge news. I haven’t decided if it’s good or bad, but either way, it’s a big deal…
Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved by both boards of directors, Macromedia stockholders will receive, at a fixed exchange ratio, 0.69 shares of Adobe common stock for every share of Macromedia common stock in a tax-free exchange. Based on Adobe’s and Macromedia’s closing prices on Friday April 15, 2005, this represents a price of $41.86 per share of Macromedia common stock.

I spent today doing a couple more things on the Jeep, then getting it washed. My Skidrow skid plates were missing an important part so I’ll have to finish them up later.
I also spent time this morning working further on the DrieStone.net site (working on the format to something a bit more custom). The last thing I have to do is format the non-blog pages to match.

Spent a number of hours today working on the Jeep. It took me a good 45 minutes to clean out the interior (and that’s not quite complete, but at least it’s not junky now). I then went to work on fixing a few outstanding issues.
I realized I did more damage than I thought when I tried to drive into the Travelers parking garage in December. Not only did I twist the floor of the roof rack, but I put a good sized dent/scratch in the roof of the Jeep as well as bent the roof rack out of square. I was finally able to bend the rack back into some semblance of square. I also spent some time putting my fender flare back on the rear.
So it’s back to looking whole visually, but there’s still a lot to do. Tomorrow I’ll be putting my armor under the engine and transfer case (which I’ve had for well over a year now). I may also try to finish wiring up the overhead console on the inside.

Cara was in the area last night interviewing in Bristol. She likes this place she interviewed at, but it’s a bit far (and the owner doesn’t want to hire someone who lives too far away). It could mean that we’d have to move to Newington or that area. I guess things went well which is good, but of course this is the first of four interviews (so far).
I have still yet to touch my taxes (which are due tomorrow). I guess I know what I’m doing tonight…

I left Manchester taking the back roads to Cara’s place stopping by Danielson on the way. I haven’t been in the area since I moved away eight months ago. It’s interesting how some things change (there were a couple new buildings built), and other things haven’t (they’re still working on the roads around Brooklyn). I talked to the woman who now lives in our old apartment about the package that was delivered. She claimed to know nothing about it, which started to make me worry. I wandered down a couple doors to one of the neighbors who would occasionally accept deliveries for me, but no luck there either. On my way back to the car the woman from my old apartment told me that she talked to her son and he had it in is closet (hmm… that’s a little odd). Anyway, I don’t really care why or what happened, just that I have the engine parts (since they did cost almost $1200).
Cara and I walked around Boston yesterday. She wanted to show me her old stomping grounds, so we walked across the city through Suffolk University and by her old apartment (and the Starbucks she used to work at). We grabbed lunch and walked through Faneuil Hall Marketplace (where I picked up a toy for myself and a couple future gifts for others). It was getting late in the afternoon so we walked back to the car and went back to her place.
Overall I like Boston quite a bit, and It’s been a while since I’ve been there. If it were cheaper to live there I’d even consider moving into the area (it is on the list of potential places to move after the Hartford area right now, but if things were different it would be at the top of the list).

Okay, “Modifications” may be making a mountain out of a molehill. Last night I removed both the dealer sticker and the gear pattern sticker* from the interior of the car. I realized (as I cleaned and rewaxed it), that the hood is plastic. I don’t know what to make of this (on one front I’m sure the hood is 1/2 the weight of a metal one, I just wonder if it will hold up will over time).
I’ve noodled a bit about my dilemma with the wheels, Justin has a set of 4 wheels from his brother’s WRX that he may want to get rid of. If that is the case I may take them, powder coat them white and mount my tires on the new wheels.
*The gear pattern sticker was this lame carbon fiber looking decal that the stick on because the titanium gear knob doesn’t have the “H” pattern on the top of the stick. Of course this was a factory installed “upgrade” that I had the dealership remove (and replace with a stock knob).

Slowly, but surely I finally got around to moving DrieStone.net to the new server. Now it’s co-hosted with DrieStone.com. Now I’m not limited to static pages. With that in mind I hope to have my “photo blog” up and running in the next month or so (which will allow me to email photos from my camera phone to my webpage).

I finally called JAE about my parts for the Lotus that should have arrived already. Well it looks like they shipped $1200 in engine parts to my OLD address. I’m a little pissed because I made it clear that I had moved and given them my new address. So now the question is… where are my freaking parts? Obviously the worst case scenario is that someone got the package and decided to just toss it (although that’s unlikely). I tried to call the old manager of the complex that I used to live at, but she’s moved (and the phone number has been disconnected). It’s quite a drive out to Danielson from here, which I don’t mind doing as long as I know my stuff is there.

So I’ve now had the Impreza for a little less than a week now. I think I can safely comment on my impressions…
I just recently clocked mile 300 on the odometer, and I’m still taking it fairly easy on the car in general, but it’s tough. I’ve kind of forgotten how much fun driving can be and this car has given me a slap across the face and said “wake up man!” Don’t get me wrong, I have the 1983 Lotus that by all rights should be as quick (if not quicker) and handle better than the Impreza, but I’m still a number of months away from getting the Lotus running, and most likely a couple years from having it running the way *I* would like to have it running. That said, the Impreza is a great commuter vehicle and I couldn’t be happier with my choice
Pros:
- AWD with lockable transfer case and limited slip rear (I’d have to be spinning 3 wheels to get stuck).
- 227HP which I probably won’t realize until closer to the 5000 mile mark (due to break in). This car is quick.
- Large front windshield, well the windshield is probably as big as most other cars, you can just see a lot more here
- Fit and finish is excellent. I realize that we’re talking about a $27k MSRP compact car, but the interior fits the car nicely (it’s not a BMW, but it’s not a Kia either.)
- Nicities that I wasn’t concerned with, but are still nice to have like the heated seats, climate control, nice leather wrapped steering wheel and six disc indash CD player.
Cons:
- Radio controls for track changes are about 2 inches too far away from my fingers, and the track change is a dial not a button (which is annoying and confusing.)
- The wheels are a “champaign” color which looks dirty even when clean.
So, I’m limiting the modifications to this car (I refuse to touch anything under the hood), but there are a couple of things I am considering:
- Maybe next spring I’ll spend some cash on wheels and tires.
- Sometime this summer I might replace the uppipe and downpipe (both exhaust components) which should provide a reasonable horsepower increase
